Professional and Peer Tutoring

Tutoring is the cornerstone of the TRiO SSS program and critical to the academic success of our students.  With that in mind, the TRiO SSS tutoring program in partnership with the Rutgers- Camden Learning Center (RCLC) provides professional and peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, and other assistance to program participants with an emphasis on building strong study skills. Using multi-modal approaches to tutoring in the areas of writing, math, science and social sciences, the tutors help students understand not only course content, but also assist students in identifying strategies for improving learning.

Academic Coaching

TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) offers holistic academic advice and guidance in academic matters to SSS students.  Each student is assigned a TRiO Counselor to work one-on-one with them.  TRiO Counselors are responsible for providing comprehensive personal, academic, career, and financial advising to SSS students and developing structured academic plans.  Specific support includes working with students to: address personal issues, resolve academic anxieties, assist with major and career field explorations, and problem solve other academic difficulties.  All TRiO students are required to meet with their TRiO Counselor and Academic Advisor each semester.  Please note that your Academic Advisor is based on your school of enrollment such as Arts & Sciences/University College, School of Business or School of Nursing.  This advising structure at RU-Camden encourages students to become directly connected with their respective school/college, academic departments, and the faculty.

Grant Aid Competition

The services that SSS provides are specifically designed to increase the retention and graduation rates of first-generation and low-income students, as well as students with a documented disability. One way in which we work towards this goal is by providing students with the opportunity to compete for additional financial assistance during their first and second years of college.  To compete for the Grant Aid award/scholarship, TRiO SSS participants must satisfy the following federal requirements:

  • Be a Pell Grant recipient
  • Have unmet financial need according to the Office of Financial Aid

The TRiO SSS Federal Student Grant Aid Award is provided by the U.S. Department of Education to support the educational pursuits of TRiO SSS participants at Rutgers University Camden.  Grant amounts are dependent upon financial unmet need and availability of funds.  Federal Grant Aid Awards do not affect any other grant amounts as this aid serves to supplement an eligible SSS student’s financial aid package.  The Grant Aid funding is for students who are current participants, within their first two years of postsecondary education, and Federal Pell Grant recipients.
